Sangalaki

6D5N Sangalaki Dive Lodge Package

Sangalaki and the surrounding Kakaban, and Samama Islands lie 30 miles from the Berau River Estuary in the Indonesian part of Borneo and are situated on the edge of Borneo's north-eastern continental shelf. The three islands, despite being in close proximity to one another, are individually quite different and offer a unique range of diving experiences. They represent the ultimate diving frontier. In each case, their remote location has left the islands largely untouched. Moreover, you will be free to enjoy the reefs in complete isolation.

Sangalaki Dive Lodge

A large centrally located complex includes a dining hall lounge, bar, business office and entertainment center. The food prepared by our experienced chef is excellent and plentiful with a mix of traditional Indonesian dishes, Oriental and Western cuisine. To keep you in touch with the outside world, a Satellite phone is available in the business office and the entertainment center features a Satellite TV system.

Scattered along the beach on either side of the Dining Hall/ Dive Station complex are 12 attractive individual sea view beach chalets. They are spacious and separated from each other by a comfortable distance for privacy. Each attractively decorated chalet is built on stilts about 3 ft. (1M) above the sand to allow passage for the turtles that nest on the beach every night. The chalets have their own verandas, two beds, and a private bathroom with hot water showers.

Each Chalet is built on stilts above the white sand beach. Every night, turtles crawl up onto the beach to lay their eggs. The chalets are built on stilts to give the turtles access to the entire beach for nesting, and they frequently lay their eggs directly beneath the chalets.

Diving in Sangalaki

Season We dive every month of the year at Sangalaki. Because we are only 2 degrees North of the Equator, we do not experience strong trade winds, a monsoon season or Typhoons. Borneo is known as "The Land Below The Winds". There are two seasons in Borneo, the "Rainy Season" which lasts from December to March and the "Dry Season" which lasts the rest of the year. That being said, since we are in the tropics, we have generally splendid weather in the "Rainy Season", and occasional tropical downpours in the "Dry Season". The temperature is a fairly constant 82-86 degrees Farenheit or 28-30 degrees Celsius year round, day and night. Offshore islands do not suffer from the high humidity of the mainland. Light sea breezes make the climate quite comfortable anytime of the year. It hasn't snowed here for 65 million years.

Conditions Our visibility averages about 65 feet (20 M.). If can fall as low as 25-30 feet (8-10 M.) or be in excess of 100 feet (30+ M.). Lots of rain out here offshore doesn't affect our visibility as much as lots of rain on the mainland which increases river runoff. Sangalaki usually has better visibility than Samama or Derawan because it is a little further offshore. Kakaban and Maratua tend to have slightly better visibility than Sangalaki because they are even further out. Visibility at Barracuda Point on Kakaban frequently tops 100 feet (30+ M.). Water temperature is a fairly constant 82F or 28C year round. Even the occasional thermocline rarely drops the temperature more than a degree or two, consequently, we have very poor conditions for ice diving.

While most of our diving is done at the spectacular sites surrounding Sangalaki, there are also frequent day trips to the neighbouring islands.
